I think that for a country of 3 million NZ has had it's share of success in technological areas, and its share of rip-offs just like anywhere else. Only yesterday I saw some US company trying to explain how it could magically produce hydrogen from water using only a small amount of electricity. What nonsense. As you say its your money, and better to be safe than sorry, but I think you'll find that New Zealanders are as innovative as anywhere else, maybe more so. About the performance of listed IT companies, most of the hype has been generated by the punters and not the companies, just look at sharechat. Admittedly some companies and individuals have sought to take advantage of the hype to try and cash in (the floating of Comsoft seems a good example). Derek PS Didn't Bill Gates inherit the money he used to get started?
