Counter that with the fact they probably spend GBP9M per month to promote
the service.  SMS is unique in that it costs almost nothing to run, and the
economics are purely how much promotion costs.  Frankly it's a pain in the
bum tapping illegible messages from titchy keyboards.  This will become
apparent in about 18 months time when the market demand shifts to WAP, and
SMS goes the way of the passenger pigeon and CB radio (and V ?)

Incidentally, the reason that SMS sending was disabled on the Telstra
network for so long was not technical problems, just they didn't have a
billing system capable of charging for it, so they turned it off till they
could bill it.  Don't be surprised if that isn't a factor in any delayed
introductions of phone technologies in NZ
