US markets closed lower on Monday while the US dollar rose to a fresh two-decade high against a basket of currencies, supported by fears of a global economic slowdown and bets on steep interest rate hikes by the US Federal Reserve. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed down 2.79%, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite were down 3.88% and 4.68% respectively.
Other key markets ended mixed. European stocks closed as follows: the FTSE100 (-1.53%), the Dax 30 (-2.43%), CAC 40 (-2.67%) and the STOXX (-2.69%). In Asia, the Hang Seng and Shanghai indices closed mixed. The key Asian indices ended yesterday as follows: Nikkei 225(-3.01%), HSI (-3.39%) and the Shanghai Composite (-0.89%).
The yield on the US 10 - year note was at 3.362%, while the 2 - year note was at 3.367%. Oil was up to $122.1 per barrel, up 0.11%. The gold price was at US$1819.22 per ounce, down 3.07%.
