How much does it cost to buy and sell shares?

Wednesday 23rd January 2002

Text too small?
Q: Could you please let me know how much the transaction costs are for buying and selling shares? Does the price vary depending on volumes transacted? When does Air NZ pay its dividends?

A: The cost of buying and selling shares (brokerage) varies from broker to broker. Most brokers in NZ charge a percentage of the total value of the order, which can be anywhere from 0.35% to 2%. The best thing to do is shop around and see who can offer you the best rate for the amounts you will be transacting. Air New Zealand historically paid dividends around March and October but in light of the huge losses in 2001 and its recapitalisation by the Crown, dividends appear unlikely for some time.
