US markets closed modestly lower on Wednesday after investors digested hotter-than-expected US inflation data, which fueled fears that the Federal Reserve could raise key interest rates by as much as 100 basis points later this month. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed down 0.67%, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite were down 0.45% and 0.15% respectively.
Other key markets ended mixed. European stocks closed as follows: the FTSE100 (-0.74%), the Dax 30 (-1.16%), CAC 40 (-0.73%) and the STOXX (-0.95%). In Asia, the Hang Seng and Shanghai indices closed mixed. The key Asian indices ended yesterday as follows: Nikkei 225(+0.54%), HSI (-0.22%) and the Shanghai Composite (+0.086%).
The yield on the US 10 - year note was at 2.935%, while the 2 - year note was at 3.149%. Oil was down to $96.51 per barrel, up 0.70%. The gold price was at US$1733.40 per ounce, up 0.50%.
