One could agree if it resulted in a lower tax rate all round i.e. the total tax 
stayed constant.
But that's not what happens. If the Labour Party gets more tax so it will spend 
more on being
Politically Correct - more Treaty of Waitangi settlements that have absolutely 
no trickle down
effect and get wasted on stupid investments like the Warriors; more on 
ratifying and putting the
Kyoto Treaty in effect ahead of all our trading competitors - I'm sure other 
people can mention
lots of other examples.
And how many bites of the cherry does Cullen want? He gets GST everything when 
its bought e.g. the
yacht you mentioned, having another bite in terms of taxing the yacht ownership 
is over the top.
Still, people who raise taxes don't govern for long ;-)
