Well, chartists methods aren't really like reading goats entrails. They
point to underlying market processes in that they pick up on changes in
investor sentiment, no more and no less IMHO. Investor sentiment is what
drives the market and therefore any handle on this is very useful.
Methods such as trendline breaks and moving average crossings may supported
by increased volume and suggest that market sentiment has changed. These
methods may not produce the right result all of the time, but that is not a
claim of the chartists.
On the other hand, I would agree with Mary that using computer programs
blindly in the hope of making money is not a wise thing to do.
