U.S. surgeons implant second artificial heart

LOUISVILLE, Ky., Sept 13 (Reuters) - Kentucky surgeons who implanted the world's first self-contained artificial heart in a 59-year-old man more than two months ago have installed a second such device in a 70-year-old man, the manufacturer of the device said on Thursday.

The latest patient, who was not identified, was recovering in intensive care at Jewish Hospital in Louisville, Abiomed Inc. (NasdaqNM:ABMD - news), of Danvers, Massachusetts, said.

It said it planned to disclose no additional details until later.

The first patient, Robert Tools, 59, was given the AbioCor plastic and titanium heart device on July 2. He conducted a news conference on Aug. 21 and was reported continuing to improve in the weeks since.

The manufacturer has been given initial regulatory approval for testing of the device on five critically ill patients.
