hairy paper shuffling issues.... bollocks! Thats a weak sales pitch for
'give me the money fool'.
You might pay your local broker in $AUS, but if its listed in US, you
pay $US. A $US100 stock is gonna cost you $AUS182....(approx, say $Aus
at .55).  There's no big deal setting up with a US broker. Changing
currency is no problem, might cost $AUS50 or so to wire funds to the US,
but you'll get that back and some, after 1 trade!
Do you want to research and  pick your own stocks? Then go with the US
brokers. Or, do you want someone to do it for you? Then go with the
local broker.
