Paulonia is indeed as you describe, also extremely susceptible to wind damage.It is a very light timber unsuitable I believe for stuctural purposes.

Tasmanian Blackwood has a similar cycle to douglas fir or shorter, is very susceptible to possum damage, they break the leaders off...difficult to establish good form unless they're grown up through holes in a native canopy...and I believe so far NZ grown product is dissappointingly variable in colour, workability, lustre, stability.
