Thanks Peter, yes the fact that this subject was brought up made me think
that it is very real and then stumbled on an appropriate article that
related to investment. I also read NUF have invested in natural herbicide
research( for 9 out of 10 of the worlds problem weeds) as I thought NUF are
vulnerable to this sentiment shift as are many others, we have all seen the
power of social conscience change the fur industry in the past, we have seen
the meat industry change in Britian and Im sure others can think of many
others that have had major impacts over time. One for me was when I lived in
Kaikoura, the whales keep the town flourishing now but the irony is their
are still photos in some of the old pubs with the whalers standing atop of
slaughtered whales. The management paper that Im doing through Massey at the
moment is full of the Socio political and Ethical side of business so I
think it will be a major consideration for future investment as more retail
investors come into the market. Just the day before this came up on
sharechat, I had opened a box of cereal from NZs Hubbards, and the
newsletter from Dick Hubbard was titled "Businesses for social
responsibility"..The following from dick.
"Where to start? Well, firstly, worldwide!. There is abolutely no doubt that
worldwide there is a rapidly growing realization and acceptance that
business must both have a sense of social responsibility and exhibit moral
leadership. This message is coming loud and clear from prominent business
people, prominent business organizations, prominent academics, prominent
politicians and prominent authors. Its groudswell stuff!.....The debate
overseas is now tangibly shifting from the Why? of social responsibility to
the How?. the ideological debate on the why is now largely won!"

So whether you agree with the ethics or not, I believe it will be an
important consideration from a pure investment perpective which seems to be
gathering momentum.
Can anyone give their examples of NZ companies that my be affected in some
part of there business, eg NUF and chemicals.
R
Warner
