Re: [sharechat] Ethical Investment
Warner - great article.
Especially this part -
"There are two kinds of ethics. First is the mainstream, ersatz kind that have
become quick fix strategies. This is the kind that can be found in many
self-help books and in the words of self-styled gurus, all competing to give us
the next dose of sugar-coated psychotherapy. Pop ethics."
"This is the form of ethics that has emerged from the dumbing down of our
society in the name of financial rewards and instant gratification – "it’s the
economy stupid".
"The second kind of ethics is that quiet type which is the result of an inner
search, self-honesty and continued integrity. This is a deep form of ethics
that resides in the very essence of each individual. Ethics of this type take
work and time to develop."
Back to your principles of finding out as much as you can about potential
investments knowing the 'ethical stance' of the company is important.
Many great businesses 1)do benefit from having a competitive advantage because
of green and 'ethical' issues and 2)are aware of such issues and develop plans
to future proof themselves to ensure sustainable profitability.
One great example of awareness is the likes of Unilever who recognise that
water (or lack of it) is their greatest threat. Toothpaste. soap powders etc
are pretty useless without water - think about it. Future development etc takes
this on board.
Providing such links on topical subjects is great Warner. That is what as you
say makes such forums a valuable source of material that expands all of
knowledge.
