You are thinking of the USENET meta-rule known as Godwin's law
   http://www.killfile.org/~tskirvin/faqs/godwin.faq
There's no reason why it shouldn't apply to mailing lists and web-based
discussion boards as well. Indeed, as the WWW has changed the demographics
of users on-line it's probably more true.
