RE: RE: [sharechat] How safe are shares (as in fraud)

Regarding banks and opening an account.

Some years back, as a youngster working in a wellington commercial bank, I
received in the post at my Wellington flat a letter for a previous tenant
we'd never heard of. Being morally ambivalent in those days, I opened it
and discovered a cheque for $240,000 australian n/n a/c payee only etc made
out to this chap.

Consequently I spent the next month racking my brains trying to figure out
how to open an account in this blokes name. Never did work it out. The
rules at the bank I was at (and NZ banker association rules I think), was
that for new customers, a piece of identification with name, signature and
photo is required (e.g. passport) Also even if you do manage to open one
now you've been videoed now from four angles and can look forward to seeing
yourself on crimewatch when it all goes horribly wrong.

Gordon

p.s. Cheque ended up in the rubbish eventually.

Nick
I recently 'lost' a FIN #. The registry would not tell my broker the
number. They cancelled the # and issued me with a new one.

I can't think of a single case of shares being stolen, paper or
electronic. Anyone else?
Probably more likely to lose your share value through the market than
theft. Hope not!!
