US markets closed sharply lower on Monday, as an early lift from a strong retail sales report gave way to a jump in Treasury yields and concerns about rising geopolitical tensions between Iran and Israel. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed down 0.65%, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite were up 1.20% and up 1.79% respectively.
Other key markets ended mixed. European stocks closed as follows: the FTSE100 (-0.38%), the Dax 30 (+0.43%), CAC 40 (+0.43%) and the STOXX (+0.59%). In Asia, the Hang Seng and Shanghai indices closed mixed. The key Asian indices ended yesterday as follows: Nikkei 225(+0.21%), HSI (-2.18%) and the Shanghai Composite (-0.49%).
The yield on the US 10 - year note was at 4.61%, while the 2 - year note was at 4.925%. Oil was up to $85.66 per barrel, up 0.00%. The gold price was at US$2399.80 per ounce, up 1.08%.
