Air New Zealand said its gas turbines business has won four contracts worth up to US$42 million to service and overhaul gas turbines that power much of the US Navy’s fleet.

The contracts are to service and overhaul General Electric LM2500 Gas Turbines and will see Air New Zealand's Auckland-based gas turbines team carry out maintenance and overhaul work for the next few years.

"This is a significant boost for our Gas Turbines business. Air New Zealand participated in a competitive bidding process to secure this work and we would like to acknowledge the support of the New Zealand Government and New Zealand Trade and Enterprise throughout the process," said Air New Zealand chief operations officer Bruce Parton.

The announcement comes the same day US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson stopped by New Zealand, meeting with Prime Minister Bill English and Foreign Minister Gerry Brownlee, and after Asia's Shangri-La Dialogue defence forum in Singapore over the weekend.

Air New Zealand's gas turbines unit provides gas turbine overhaul and repair services to clients across a range of industries. It began sourcing work in the industrial and marine sector more than 30 years ago and has since supported several of the world’s navies, offshore oil and gas platform operators and power generation companies.

Last November, the airline signed an eight-year contract to overhaul and repair auxiliary power units produced by Honeywell Aerospace at its Christchurch engineering base.

Air NZ's shares rose 3.5 percent to $3.
