Air NZ boss folds wings

Long-time Air New Zealand boss Jim McCrea has resigned saying it's time for him to look for a fresh challenge.

The announcement comes just as the honeymoon was being planned following the marriage between Air New Zealand and Ansett Australia.

Mr McCrea says now that the two airlines have been brought together there is a natural turning point in a development strategy he has been driving since he took the top slot at Air New Zealand.

"Now we have developed a new Australasian business group with the scale and opportunities of a world top-20 airline, it's time for me to look for a fresh challenge."

"Whoever succeeds me will have the opportunity to shape the new executive team to lead the group through the next phase of its development".

Mr McCrea says the Air NZ-Ansett Australia merger can generate the financial benefits required to compete in the steadily globalising airline industry.

Air New Zealand's chairman, Sir Selwyn Cushing, said Mr McCrea had made a major contribution to the company's development during his term as chief executive and managing director.

He says the board thanks him for all his efforts on behalf of the company and wishes him success with his next challenge.
