Air New Zealand said today it would expand its code share arrangements with Star Alliance partner Air Canada from next week.

The arrangement covers seating on Air Canada flights from Los Angeles to Calgary and Montreal and also those to Vancouver and Toronto from Los Angeles.

In turn, Air Canada will code share on Air New Zealand's services between Auckland & Los Angeles and Sydney and Los Angeles.

The announcement follows news on Friday that Star Alliance member United Airlines, now in bankruptcy proceedings, was quitting its Auckland-Los Angeles service.

Air New Zealand's senior vice president for sales and distribution, Norm Thompson, said that the code expansion marked a major shift in Air New Zealand's relationship with Air Canada.

"This recent arrangement is the outcome of our work together to encourage more Canadians to visit New Zealand and likewise for New Zealanders to visit Canada," Mr Thompson said.

New Zealand had become an increasingly popular destination for Canadian tourists with arrivals for the 12 months to July 2002 at 37,500 - an increase of 7 percent on the preceding year.

The two airlines already code share on a number of flights between New Zealand, Hawaii, the United States and Canada.
