Air New Zealand announced today it has not reached a deal with Qantas, contrary to speculation that such a deal had prompted a trading halt in Qantas shares.

Qantas requested an immediate three-day trading halt of its shares on the Australian Stock Exchange today, following speculation surrounding its annual results tomorrow.

Air NZ said in a statement that although discussions with Qantas are ongoing, no relevant agreement or commitment has been reached.

"Air NZ also advises that no relevant agreements are expected to be reached with Qantas in the next few days and it does not expect to conclude any significant strategic agreements in the next few weeks.

"On this basis, Air NZ has not requested either the ASX or the New Zealand Stock Exchange to impose a trading halt or suspend quotation of the company's shares."

Today's Australian newspaper reported Qantas would announce a capital raising of up to $A1 ($NZ1.17 billion) when it reported its full year profit on Wednesday.
