Department of Conservation boss Al Morrison is leaving for a new role at the State Services Commission as the department prepares for "significant change."

Morrison will take up the role of Deputy Commissioner - Corporate Centre at the commission on Sept. 7, the central arm of the state bureaucracy said in a statement.

Until then he will remain chief executive at DOC, which is "currently working on proposals for significant change," Deputy State Services Commissioner Sandi Beatie said.

The department last month announced it would shed 140 workers as it adjusts to a shrinking budget that has conservation groups complaining it is losing the resources to do its job. The latest job cuts are aimed at cutting costs by $9 million a year.

The SSC role is "at the centre of government that will be responsible for ensuring Central Agencies increase the pace and momentum of change for the delivery of better public services," Beatie said.

Morrison will work closely with the Secretary to the Treasury and the Chief Executive of the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet.

"These three agencies make up the Corporate Centre, which has been established to collectively lead the State sector and drive improved performance to deliver increased effectiveness through better public services," Beatie said.

The government will begin a recruitment process for a new DOC CEO in the coming weeks.
