That's a slight improvement on April when 2206 consents were issued.
In seasonally-adjusted terms new home consents fell by 5.9 percent to 1990.
For the year ended May, the average number of new dwelling units was 1862 per month, 16 percent higher than the 1609 recorded a year earlier.
The Auckland region was the main contributor to this increase, up an average of 172 units per month compared with the year ended May 2001. Building activity also increased in Otago and Canterbury, with the two regions recording an average of 25 and 24 more units per month.
The total value for non-residential building consents issued in May 2002 was $243.9 million. Consents issued for shops, restaurants and taverns were worth $44.1 million (18 percent of the non-residential buildings total).
Consents for factories and industrial buildings contributed $35.9 million, or 15 percent.
The total value of all building consents issued in May 2002 was $722.9 million, the highest value ever recorded.
