Debbie Power, a senior executive in the Ministry of Social Development , has been named deputy State Services Commissioner.

State Services Commissioner Iain Rennie said Power led changes to welfare services including "the investment approach into Work and Income which have been the biggest changes made to the welfare system in 50 years." She also drove changes to delivery of social housing support that stemmed from the government's housing reforms and led a restructure of the ministry's service lines, he said.

Power is currently deputy chief executive, service delivery at MSD, New Zealand's largest government agency, with oversight of about 6,000 government workers in 240 locations and $20 billion in financial assistance payments.

“Ms Power has a wealth of experience in the delivery of frontline government services and managing complex, large scale operations throughout New Zealand,” Rennie said.

She takes up her new role on June 15, replacing Sandi Beatie, who is due to retire on April 30. Andrew Hampton will be acting deputy State Services Commissioner until Power starts, Rennie said.
