Tranz Rail rejigs strait service

The Lynx is due to resume its summer sailings in December with increased capacity, taking 800 passengers and 260 cars.

TRH spokesman Fred Cockram says the company is responding to changing customer demands and changing circumstances in Cook Strait transport.

He says as part of its fleet review Tranz Rail has just completed a detailed assessment of its conventional freight ferry Arahanga which is now 28-years-old, and because it requires a significant amount of work, it has decided to withdraw it from service in December.

"This changes our fleet configuration from three year-round conventional vessels and a summer only fast ferry to two conventional ferries and one fast ferry on a year-round basis. The new configuration provides a capacity mix that better matches today's market requirements."

Mr Cockram says the company is also looking at adding some night sailings of The Lynx at peak times over the summer following the withdrawal of competitor Top Cat.

Tranz Rail recently announced plans to sell non-core assets, including passenger rail services, to concentrate on its interisland ferries and rail freight business.
