Accommodation sector grows in September

Statistics New Zealand says guests spent 1.9 million nights in short-term commercial accommodation during September 2001, 10% above the figure recorded in September last year.

Apart from Waikato, where guest nights fell by 2%, all regions recorded more guest nights than the same month last year. The increase for the South Island was 11%, slightly higher than the 9% rise in the North Island.

Six of the country's 12 regions recorded guest night growth of 10% or more compared with September last year and Auckland recorded the largest regional rise, up 18%.

The figures show continuing strong demand for backpacker and hostel accommodation, with that segment of the market jumping 14% over September 2000. Hotels had the next highest rise at 13%.
