Shell has been aggressively pushing its pricing for some time, trying to win market share from all companies but particularly from market leader, BP.
The oil company announced a drop in pump prices of 3 cents a litre on Wednesday, bringing the price of its regular brand down to 93.9 cents per litre and its premium offering down to 98.9 cents per litre.
The other major petrol firms quickly followed the drop.
Shell's retail manager, Bruce Emson, says the reduction maintains the company's commitment in 2002 to bringing customers the lowest possible petrol prices again this year.
"Shell spent 2001 leading more price reductions, limited-time discounts, and coupon discounts, than all of our competition combined," he says.
Shell says the price reduction will not affect areas where market pressure has already seen prices fall to lower levels.
