US markets closed lower on Tuesday while US Treasury yields rose sharply as investors concerned about higher inflation following a phased ban of Russian oil imports by the European Union that pushed crude oil prices to new highs. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed down 0.67%, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite were down 0.63% and 0.41% respectively.
Other key markets ended mixed. European stocks closed as follows: the FTSE100 (+0.10%), the Dax 30 (-1.29%), CAC 40 (-1.43%) and the STOXX (-1.36%). In Asia, the Hang Seng and Shanghai indices closed mixed. The key Asian indices ended yesterday as follows: Nikkei 225(-0.33%), HSI (+1.38%) and the Shanghai Composite (+1.19%).
The yield on the US 10 - year note was at 2.85%, while the 2 - year note was at 2.563%. Oil was up to $122.8 per barrel, up 0.96%. The gold price was at US$1838.06 per ounce, down 0.78%.
