Market close: Positive day on the bourse

The sharemarket surged upwards today with the NZSE50 up 1.72% to end the day at 3,352.

Top stock Telecom was up slightly 0.3%, while the second-ranked Contact Energy gained 2.0% and Fletcher Building increased 4.1%.

It was also a positive day for retailers with Pumpkin Patch jumping 5.5% and The Warehouse Group gaining 1.5% and retailer Michel Hill rising 1.2%. In the energy sector Vector climbed 0.4% and TrustPower moved up 2.6%.

Other major gainers included AMP 5.1% , Goodman Fielder 6.6%, Goodman Property Trust 5.4%, Nuplex 2.6%, Skellerup 3.3% and Cavalier 4.2% .

Rakon had an outstanding day, rising 8.2% and Dominion Finance Holdings gained 11.1% after it resumed trading following almost a months suspension.

Bucking the trend, New Zealand Oil & Gas fell 1.3%, Plus SMS Holdings took a 16.6% dive and Xero gave back some of its previous gains dropping 11.4%.

Banks continued their run with ANZ up 4.6% and Westpac up 6.8%.

CDL Investments New Zealand remained unchanged after the residential property developer said its first-half profit fell 80% because of a slump in the property market.

Australia markets had a stella day with the benchmark S&P/ASX200 index adding 148.7 points, to close at 4969.1. BHP Billiton was one of the biggest contributors to the gain, up $1.40, or 3.9%, to $37.22.

On the back of positive data, a fall in oil prices and the Federal Reserve's decision to keep the benchmark interest rate unchanged, the Dow rose 331.62, or 2.94%, to 11,615.77. The Standard & Poor's 500 index added 35.87, or 2.87%, to 1,284.88, and the Nasdaq composite index rose 64.27, or 2.81%, to 2,349.83. at 2%.
