Wellington-based mobile radio company, TeamTalk, is buying Telecom's mobile radio unit, which it plans to merge with its current operations.
Telecom's Mohan Jesudason says the decision to sell the business reflects TEL's transformation into an online and communications business.
Following TeamTalk's acquisition Telecom will acquire a 19.9% shareholding in the mobile radio company.
TeamTalk CEO, David Ware, says the sale will have a positive impact on emergency services such as ambulance organisations.
"TeamTalk has offered a nationwide emergency call priority service comparable to Fleetlink's for the past five years. The quality of that service will only be enhanced by the merger with Telecom's mobile radio networks."
Mr Ware says the sale will provide greater coverage, and allow TeamTalk to offer a wider range of products and services.
Prior to the sale TeamTalk was 50% owned by Active Equities Limited with the remainder held by TeamTalk management.
