The company says the 2000 square-metre Foodtown supermarket is a logical and important step for its Airport Shopping Centre, and the airport community.
Food company Progressive Enterprises, which owns the Foodtown brand, says the airport site provides a very large potential market.
"The 7,500 people who work at the airport, and the 8 million passengers who use it each year represent in excess of 20 million visits to the airport on an annual basis," says property general manager Adrian Walker.
"We are very enthusiastic about this project as we see the Airport as an area in which real growth can be sustained going forward."
In the six months to the end of December AIA earned $28.7 million or 31% of its income from retail activities and $8.5 million or 9% of revenue from rent.
The supermarket is due to be finished by the end of September.
