Car registrations jump in March

Figures from the Land Transport Safety Authority show there were 22,797 first-time registrations of new and used imported vehicles last month compared with 19,379 in March 2001.

It was the twelfth straight month that registrations have been up on the previous year.

New car registrations were up 12.8% to 5,432, while used import registrations rose 19.4% to 12,501.

Ford took the top spot in new car registrations last month with 17.2% of the market followed by Holden at 16% and Toyota with 14.2%.

The three most popular new car models for the month were the Holden VX Commodore, Ford Falcon and Ford Mondeo.

Truck registrations were up 28% to 2,417 and tractor registrations rose from 118 to 196, reflecting buoyant rural conditions.
