Market close: Shares close higher

The sharemarket rose slightly today with the NZSE50 up 0.89% to end the day at 3,187.

Top stock Telecom lost 0.4% and the second-ranked Contact Energy declined 0.5%, while the third best stock Fletcher Building was up 0.4%.

The retail sector was mixed with The Warehouse Group climbing 1.6% and Pumpkin Patch gaining 2.2%. Meanwhile Hallenstein Glasson dropped 5.0% and Michael Hill closed unchanged.

Other major gainers included Botry-Zen was up 25%, ANZ was up 16.34%, ProvencoCadmus and Glass Earth Gold were both up 13.33%, Life Pharmacy was up 11.11%, AMP up 9.80%, Westpac was up 9.11%.

On the flip side, the biggest decliners were BLIS Technologies down 8.33%, Skellerup Holdings down 4.44%, NZ Windfarms down 2.11% and Steel & Tube Holdings down 1.91%.

Today Dairy Trust, 44% owned by meat processor AFFCO Holdings, succeeded in its takeover offer for Open Country Cheese Co.

Dorchester Pacific, whose shares have tumbled 96% this year, said today it has delayed its annual meeting while it tries to finalise a schedule of deferred repayments to investors.

The benchmark S&P/ASX200 index gained 198.2 points, or 4.3%, to 4805.5. The broader All Ordinaries had swelled 193.2 points, or 4.15%, to 4845.1.

The Dow Jones soared 410.03, or 3.86%, to 11,019.69, surging 560 points from its low of the day, 10,459.44.
The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 50.12, or 4.33%, to 1,206.51, and the Nasdaq composite index advanced 100.25, or 4.78%, to 2,199.10.
