US markets closed lower in choppy trading on Wednesday as investors assessed the Federal Reserve's interest rate stance and a batch of soft earnings early in the financial reporting season. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed down 0.12%, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite were down 0.58% and 1.15% respectively.

Other key markets ended lower. European stocks closed as follows: the FTSE100 (+0.35%), the Dax 30 (+0.02%), CAC 40 (+0.62%) and the STOXX (-0.06%). In Asia, the Hang Seng and Shanghai indices closed mixed. The key Asian indices ended yesterday as follows: Nikkei 225(-1.32%), HSI (+0.02%) and the Shanghai Composite (+2.14%).

The yield on the US 10 - year note was at 4.589%, while the 2 - year note was at 4.934%. Oil was up to $82.83 per barrel, down 2.96%. The gold price was at US$2387.50 per ounce, down 0.84%.
