Dryden Spring to step down as ANZ National chairman

Dryden Spring has announced his retirement from the chair and board of ANZ National Bank, the country's biggest lender.

Spring will formally step down on June 22, after 18 years associated with the lender including six as chairman. His replacement is by fellow director John Judge, who chairs the Accident Compensation Corp.

Two years ago, Spring retired as an independent director of Fletcher Building, having joined Fletcher Challenge in 1999 before it was broken up into its operating units. He was previously chairman of Fletcher Challenge Forests - now known as Tenon.

Spring was knighted for his services to the dairy industry in 1994, having chaired the NZ Cooperative Dairy Co from 1982 to 1989 and the New Zealand Dairy Board from 1989 to 1999.

Judge is also a director of Fletcher Building, and most recently has had to contend with a privacy breach from the ACC, which cost former ACC Minister Nick Smith his seat at the Cabinet table over his advocacy of a complainant.

Separately, ANZ National's chief financial officer Peter Marriott announced he will resign from management and as a director from the end of the month.
