TEL mobile knocked by software glitch

The outage has affected service to prepaid customers on the 025 network and up to 60% of customers on post-paid call plans.

Telecom says customers affected by the outage have not been able to receive calls and may have had problems making calls.

Problems with a software upgrade early in the morning are being blamed for the service breakdown, although calls to the emergency services 111 network have not been affected.

"We are working with software supplier Ericsson to resolve the problem as swiftly as possible and hope to have most affected customers back on the network within a few hours," Telecom's GM, Mobility, Lorraine Witten says.

"We apologise to affected customers and want to assure them that we and Ericsson are pulling out all the stops to restore service."

The embarrassing outage comes just a day after a report that Ericsson had signed a five-year contract with Telecom to operate and manage its entire mobile network.
