Flying changes at airlines

Virgin Blue Holdings has appointed John Borghetti as its new chief executive officer and managing director from next Monday.

Chairman Neil Chatfield says the board is delighted to have Borghetti join them as he is a highly regarded executive with deep aviation experience and insights; proven strategic capabilities and strong marketing credentials.

"Nobody knows the market better and he is passionate about the aviation business."

Current Virgin Blue chief executive officer and co-founder of the company, Brett Godfrey announced in July 2009 his intention to step down from the leadership role this year.

"With the company poised to move to its next level, John is the right person to now lead Virgin Blue through that new phase of evolution," Chatfield says.

Borghetti says he feels privileged to have been selected as the new leader of Virgin Blue and he looks forward to working with the team to create an even more competitive environment for air travellers - domestic and international.

The Qantas Airways board has also had a shake up with chief financial officer, Colin Storrie, intent on stepping down and resigning from the Board in order to spend time with his family for personal and health reasons.

Qantas Airways chairman Leigh Clifford says Storrie's resignation would take final effect from March 5 and that the board had agreed to succession arrangements proposed by chief executive officer Alan Joyce.

Qantas will consider internal and external candidates to replace Storrie, and has engaged advisers to assist.
