The number of vehicles registered in New Zealand in April rose nearly 17% compared with the same month last year but fell compared with the previous month.

Figures from the Land Transport Safety Authority show there were 20,085 first-time registrations of new and used imported vehicles in April compared with 17,197 in the same month last year.

However the number was 12% lower than in March 2002, when 22,797 vehicles were registered.

New car registrations were up 29% compared with last year at 4,735 while used import registrations rose 11.4% to 11,042.

The market share leader for new car registrations last month was Holden with 18.7%, ahead of Toyota with 16.6% and Ford with 14.4%.

The LTSA says the three most popular new car models for the month were the Holden VX Commodore, Toyota Corolla and Ford Falcon.

Truck registrations were up 41% compared to last April at 2,132.
