Air NZ discounts online fares

Air New Zealand (NZSE: AIR) is planning to emulate its discount subsidiary Freedom Air and begin offering cheaper prices for domestic fares booked online.

The airline will begin selling the new, low-level fares next week for return flights between Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.

It says the new fares will be the cheapest if offers on its key domestic routes and can only be booked over the internet.

The prices will be $178 for Auckland-Wellington return, $218 for Auckland-Christchurch return and $132 for Wellington-Christchurch return.

"We've taken this step because we want to provide a benefit to our customers who choose to use the internet as their booking mechanism," says Air NZ sales spokesman Norm Thompson.

"The internet is an easy medium to use for point-to-point fares such as these, and it offers the service at a low cost to both the customer and the company."

Mr Thompson says the airline is looking at how to better use its website to generate revenue and will be monitoring customer reaction to assess the viability of extending the offer to other fares or other routes.

The fares are for return flights and are subject to a 21-day advance purchase condition plus a Saturday night stay. The relevant levies are extra.
