US markets closed lower on Tuesday while the US Treasury yields rose to 2-year highs as comments from Federal Reserve Governor Lael indicated the possibility of more aggressive monetary policy tightening. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed down 0.80%, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite were down 1.26% and 2.26% respectively.
Most other key markets ended mixed. European stocks closed as follows: the FTSE100 (+0.72%), the Dax 30 (-0.65%), CAC 40 (-1.28%) and the STOXX (-0.84%). In Asia, the Hang Seng and Shanghai indices closed higher. The key Asian indices ended yesterday as follows: Nikkei 225 (+0.19%), HSI (+2.10%) and the Shanghai Composite (+0.94%).
The yield on the US 10 - year note was at 2.554%, while the 2 - year note was at 2.524%. Oil was up to $105.7 per barrel, down 1.70%. The gold price was at US$1923.68 per ounce, down 0.40%.
