Waste Management gets greener

WAM says it plans to commission three more of the plants by the end of the year - two in Manukau City and another at Redvale, north of Auckland.

The waste company says in addition to being environmentally friendly the plants will generate revenue and cut operational costs at the sites.

After serving on-site needs, both sites will export electricity to the grid for local consumption.

It says the second generator at Redvale will double the existing one megawatt capacity and is another step toward a potential generation of 15 megawatts.

The Whitford landfill ultimately will have the capacity to install between four and five megawatts generation, with electricity wholesale prices determining the volume of power generated.
