Electricity lines company Orion has thrown down the gauntlet to power retailers to cut prices with its announcement its wholesale rates will be reduced 3.5%, equating to a reduction in charges of $5 million.

Managing director Chris Laurie said Orion had achieved efficiencies but they did not involve cutting work on maintenance.

Orion's charges make up about half the retail electricity price for households.

They include the cost of running the local network and Transpower charges.
