Utility distribution company, UnitedNetworks (NZSE: UNL), is using the electricity crisis to promote its gas business.

The company has begun a new promotional campaign for gas, aimed at electricity consumers currently being asked to make power savings due to a cold, dry winter.

UNL marketing boss, Bryan Crawford, says the campaign aims to rekindle the strong, latent demand for gas, which he says has suffered from a lack of marketing activity.

"It accompanies a new era of co-operation in the industry, after a long period of fragmentation."

Mr Crawford says the co-operative approach was recently launched with the unveiling of a gas channel partner programme involving 45 of the company's business partners.

"We're happy to take the role of facilitator on behalf of the gas industry, and this initiative represents the first step in a long-term generic programme to promote natural gas."

The campaign is initially only being run in Auckland but will be widened to other areas in the future.

The company says Auckland has a low penetration of gas connection where gas mains pass the front gate, and there is seen as having the greatest growth potential.

UnitedNetworks paid Orion $550 million last year for its gas business.
