Australian airline Qantas has chosen Brisbane ahead of Auckland as its preferred location for a new A$65.8 million heavy maintenance facility.

The facility is for the airline's 36-strong fleet of Boeing 767 aircraft and is due to begin operating in the second half of next year.

The existing B767 facility will be relocated from the Qantas jet base at Mascot where space is needed for future expansion of the airline's Sydney domestic terminal.

Qantas chief executive-designate, Geoff Dixon, says the selection of Brisbane was subject to reaching agreement with unions over more efficient work practices at the facility.

"We conducted a comprehensive business case, which included options to locate the B767 facility in Australia and Auckland, before making the selection."

Mr Dixon said some 250 Mascot-based B767 maintenance and workshop staff would be offered the opportunity to relocate to the new Brisbane base, which would eventually employ more than 500 people.

He says Qantas is grateful for the assistance offered by the Queensland government towards the location of the base at Brisbane Airport.
