New Zealand-born Mr Robson began his newspaper career as a sports reporter and became editor of Wellington's Evening Post newspaper in 1975.
In 1982 he took the role of INL group general manager and guided the group through a number of new developments including the purchase of Christchurch's Press newspaper and the company's 47% investment in Sky Television (NZSE: SKY), where he was deputy chairman.
During his time at INL the company also expanded into overseas markets and ventured online, launching its Stuff website earlier this year.
INL chairman Sir Colin Maiden says Rick Neville, who has been a director of the company since 1996, would act as act as the company's managing director further announcements are made.
INL is 49.5% owned by global media giant News Corporation.
