Ross Wilson was dumped as chairman of ACC and replaced by former Ernst & Young chief executive John Judge.

ACC Minister Nick Smith said further directors may be rolled as John Key's administration asserts its strategy for the state-owned accident compensation body.

"I am not satisfied that the current board has the right skills to navigate this very large enterprise out of financial trouble and I intend to make further changes to strengthen ACC's governance and lead a new strategic direction," Smith said.

Wilson, former president of the Council of Trade Unions, was appointed chairman of the ACC in 2007 for the three-year term. Smith signaled he wanted changes to the governance of ACC after an independent report found the former government should have disclosed a NZ$1.5 billion funding shortfall in the pre-election fiscal update.

Smith said ACC needs "a fresh start." Some current board members may be reappointed while the new board will be in place by the end of March, he said.
