Market close: Shares close slightly lower

The sharemarket fell slightly today with the NZSE50 down -0.51% to end the day at 3,334.

Top stock Telecom gained .31%, Fletcher Building gained 1.57% and Contact Energy was up .23%.

In the retail space The Warehouse was down nearly 5%, Pumpkin Patch was unchanged, Hallenstein Glasson was down .7%. Michael Hill dipped 1.12%.

Top gainers included Pacific Brands up 11.36%, Pan Pacific Petroleum up 3.70%, Freightways up 3.45%, Kingfish up nearly 2% and Lion Nathan up 1.85%.

Today's biggest losers were Plus SMS Holdings down 23.33%, Geneva Finance down 10% and OceanaGold down 8.33%.

Fisher & Paykel Appliances tumbled over 11% after the company said earnings will be hurt by costs to relocate plants overseas.

Freightways, was up 3.45% after announcing a 5% gain in annual profit and increased its final dividend after expanding in Australia and lifting sales from express packages.

The Australian benchmark S&P/ASX200 index dipped 1.4 points, or 0.3%, to 4980.0. Miner BHP Billiton Ltd and steelmaker BlueScope Steel released their annual results.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average advanced 43.97 points, or 0.38%, to close at 11,659.90, while the tech-rich Nasdaq composite fell 1.15 points, or 0.05% to 2,452.52.
The broad-market Standard & Poor's 500 index gained 5.27 points to finish at 1,298.20.
