Re: [sharechat] Re: Gambling and other BAD things
To Karyn and Woody the Chef.
I once thought Woody was a rational man until he tells
us he works as a chef. I employed a number of chefs in
my short life of 56 years and I would say they were
difficult hypoactive fly off the deep end with out
thinking who useually turned out wonderful menues most
of the time.
However I could bet the meal cooked by Karyn would be
delicious with out stress, high in protein and with
nourishment too.
Karyn talks tremendous truths !
< I would like to know if all those people who object
to investing in gambling related stocks have the same
ethical objections to investing in mining and forestry
stocks?
After all, it would seem to me that environmental
devastation, pollution, loss of native wildlife, land
poisoning, and depletion of the ozone layer, are all
far greater problems than those caused by gambling?
Or do the profits from a mining company "striking it
rich" justify overlooking the fact they do it by
laying waste to our planet?

< If you follow the logic of this argument then
society should:
(1) Ban all cars and other vehicles, as thousands of
people every year are killed or maimed in vehicular
accidents. This causes more damage to families than a
weekly flutter on a pokie machine or lotto ticket.
(2) Ban all forms of drugs and alcohol, as this causes
more damage to people and families by fuelling
domestic violence, street violence, drink driving etc.
More people suffer from the effects of alcohol
addiction than gambling related problems.
(3) Ban all forms of guns, knives, baseball bats,
hammers, gardening implements - anything that can be
used as a weapon. Obviously these dangerous items
should not be trusted to ordinary people to make a
rational decision as to how to use them... like
gambling, they may lose total control over their
actions and go on to commit criminal acts, placing
their families in jeopardy!!!
At the end of the day gambling is a form of
entertainment. People have been indulging in this
form of entertainment since time began. 99.9% of
people
dont have a problem with it. The fact a few do does
not make it something that should be banned. You can
choose to spend your money on a beer in a pub, a movie
ticket, or put it into the pokie machine. None of
them has any
lasting value to you - however a proportion of the
money you spend gambling will go to a charity, the
money you spend on alcohol, food, clothing, movies,
sports events - will not.

Before I give snapshot of my life, here is Woody’s
reply with a culinary of tastes that wet my appetite !
< Obviously you are as knowledgeable in the science of
statistics as you are in the effects of gambling on
society. 99.9% don't have a problem! Hogwash here in
Cairns 10% of the population have a mild problem with
gambling and 4% have a Major problem with gambling.
Your argument about cars etc is groundless,
unscientific and ridiculous. I have just taught my
son to drive a car responsibly, Should I now teach him
to " Flutter " a pokie equally so?
We were being killed by runaway horses, carts,
falling out of trees attacked by wild animals, dying
of common dieases long before the Automobile. The form
of gambling then was which fly ran up the teepee
faster,> etc.
I was once a motor mechanic and was lucky enough to
work in the panel beating department for a few months
where I saw a number of cars that were involved in
fatal accidents. One of the fatalities being a
employes son, and daughter of another staff member.
Having to shovel foamy blood from the car floor matts
still remains on my mind. No matter how well you teach
a person to drive responsibly there is always a chance
of the other vehicle involved as what appeared to
happen in this case or either car being at fault. To
answer your question regarding teaching to flutter a
pokie then yes is the answer. We teach our children
everything good and bad.
We all make mistakes in our teachings at times too.
Regarding all things in life money goes around.
Without cars, computers, accidents, bankers, brokers,
chefs, pokies, psychologists, hospitals and
undertakers etc life would not be a challenge.
I thought life was going along just fine 18 years ago
and then disaster struck losing every single dollar I
had < $800,000 > plus having to pay off $100,000 debt.
My wife and I refused to go into bankruptcy as it was
through no fault of our own doing. We sued the other
person which took 7 years to get to court won our case
but failed to get much of a settlement.<$17,000>
I was working a 12 hour 7 day’s per week job paying
off the debt for 18 months when I had a major work
accident. I have not worked since except if you call
sitting in front of a computer in the afternoons
watching the ASX buying and selling shares work. I
trade shares a few times a month. My wife is working
full time. Even so she also has had bad luck, breast
cancer and was given 2 years. That was 8 years ago.
Maybe I am addicted to share trading and being unfair
in not spending my loot but then my broker would not
get his commission to help feed his family.
My banker most likely hates us as we payed off our
modest house and have not had a mortgage for the past
6 years and we pay the Visa on time every month. New
Zealand is a great place to get back on your feet and
save money if you really want to. I have never played
a pokie but buy Power Ball in Australia and New
Zealand each week.
Our worth is so close to $700,000 at the moment but
can decrease or increase by $50,000 per day. My broker
likes what I do, he makes money and we accumulate
wealth tax free at the moment due to our earlier
company misfortune from the tax loss carried forward.
We have never spent one cent of the money made but
still add a few thousand each year from my wifes
income.
I suppose what I am saying is. Life is an experience
enjoy it wealthy or broke. I started work penny less
1965 apparently we were well off from 1975 to 1986,
broke 86 to 96 but saved like squirrels and found we
had money in the bank again by 1997, invested it in a
few shares and the portfolio grew.
When do I sell up my portfolio Woody ?
Do I have to stop trading it is fun ?
May be I am addicted!
My son tells me I am a gambler because I trade shares!
