Lippy has posed the question 'are J B Were what they were?'
My response as a J B Were client is, no, they are not what they were.
When asking for buy recommendations I get the feeling that I am being sold
their book and their recent Vertex offering, as lead manager, was overcooked.
The reason I choose to use a full service broker is because of the research
and advise that they offer, and the access they offer through their corporate
arm to new offerings.
Recent experiences have lead me to question whether I should use a discount
broker. That question is still unresolved.
Let's be fair to full service brokers. If they were to rely on pure broking
they would soon go broke. Often their broking arm is a loss leader to their
corporate finance business where the profits are. I am not innocent. I do not
expect to come first in J B Were's affections over their corporate clients.
However I am suspicious that J B Were have crossed that hard to define line
between using clients as an asset to their using them as sacrificial lambs.
