Re: [sharechat] Goodbye Phil

He he - thanks for the comments Will, Snoopy, Chris, Gerry and Peter.

I have to admit Peter that there have been times over the past couple of
years when reviewing company statements that I have thought "why do they
make it so hard to figure out if they are doing well or badly?" Naturally,
that in itself is usually enough to ring alarm bells. Every business
publication probably needs at least one - if not several - auditors who
could trawl through the announcements/reports with a fine tooth comb to
figure out what is "really" going on.

Then again, I have often paused for thought and wondered what shareholders
would prefer - that a company give the best spin on its current state, or
that they tell the truth, for better or worse? Maybe that depends on
whether you are planning to invest in a company or whether you already hold
shares.

Probably the biggest lesson of the past couple of years for all investors
has been to forget the rhetoric - especially in light of the dizzy dot.com
heights - and focus on the numbers. That is something chartists certainly
do well, as do fundamentalists.

The conundrum is that future numbers - and therefore trying to figure out
the inherent "growth value" in a company's share price - can't be measured
by chartists or fundamentalists because the future has not been written yet.
Which brings us back to relying on the rhetoric?

Happy investing!

Phil
