I certainly hope that the Air New Zealand board and management have enough
sense not to turn our (it's quite literally ours now isn't it) flagship
carrier into a budget airline...

Air New Zealand's business class has built an international reputation for
top-notch service and hospitality.  Accolades include a gushing review in
Wallpaper* magazine (style guide for the world) a few years back.  To
destroy this reputation for the sake of *maybe* doing better in the
marketplace is ridiculously shortsighted.

Hopefully NZers won't once again sell ourselves short.  Air NZ does
international travel well - very well.  Why not build on this reputation of
excellence rather than throw it all out the window for some peanuts and
cola?
