Stock Guru Competition 2002 Monthly Update - Supported by Access Brokerage
Retail and air travel stocks are the obvious improvers at this stage of the
Stock Guru Competition, with companies like Air New Zealand, Auckland
International Airport and The Warehouse standing out from the crowd.
The leading portfolio at the end of April belongs to "Bud Fox", up 21.7%
since the start of the competition. The jump in Air NZ over the past week
definitely lifted this portfolio, with the airline's shares leaping 58%
thanks to the stronger kiwi dollar, lower costs, improving tourism numbers
and a bullish broker report. Bud Fox also has Force Corp (up 43%) and
Arthur Barnett (up 16%) to thank for the top ranking.
Silver medal for April goes to "Crusher" with a gain of 20%. Air NZ also
features in this portfolio, as does Auckland International Airport (up 12%),
GPG (up 17%) and The Warehouse, which has risen 12% since the picks were
made.
Next best performance is from "morpork", who also picked AIR and AIA and
made the canny retail choice of Briscoes Group, which is up 22%. morpork's
portfolio has risen overall by 18.59%.
Tech stocks continue to be trouble at the other end of the spectrum -
literally in the case of those who chose Spectrum Resources, which is down
13%. Strathmore, CommSoft and ITC are other poor performers and the past
week has also punished Melbourne-based credit and receivables company, RMG
(down 31%).
CS First Boston (now First NZ Securities) holds onto its number one spot
among the brokers with a 16% rise thanks to its winning trio of Briscoe
Group, Force Corp and GPG.

Of all the stocks chosen by would-be Stock Gurus, Designer Textiles is the
year's standout rise to date, up 62%. DTL is followed by BIL International
with a 59% rise and Air NZ up 58%. CommSoft was the worst performing stock
on the NZSE in 2001 and appears to be finding that mantle hard to shrug off
so far in 2002. Its shares are down 72% since the start of the competition.
We trust you are all enjoying keeping an eye on your Stock Guru portfolios.
We will send another update at the beginning of June.
